What PTSD and trauma can look like
After a difficult or overwhelming event, many people can return to healthy functioning over time. Some people continue to feel impacted by the event – having memories or flashbacks of what occurred, difficulty sleeping, eating or going to work or school. You might avoid anything that reminds you of what happened, or feel numb and disconnected from people you care about. These strategies are efforts to cope and keep you safe. Treatment can help you heal, not just survive.
Common signs

Re-experiencing the event as though you were living through it again, flashbacks can occur during the day or show up as nightmares.
Avoidance and Numbing
