What OCD can look like
OCD is more than being neat or organized. It involves obsessions, or upsetting thought patterns that make it difficult to focus on other life tasks. Compulsions are repeated behaviors to redirect the worry and feel better. Unfortunately, the relief is temporary and compulsions become more involved to manage the increasing worries. Obsessions can focus on anything, common ones include germs and health, counting to maintain consistent behavior habits, checking that doors are locked or appliances are shut off. Compulsions may vary, though common ones are repeatedly hand washing, checking doors are closed, lights are off, family members are safe. Initially, compulsions may be simple or quick and still reduce anxiety. Over time, they become longer, more frequent or intense to achieve the same emotional relief. OCD can result in hours spent with rituals, loss of enjoyable activities and a sense of shame or self doubt.
