What perinatal and postpartum mental health can look like
Parents often expect to feel tired or overwhelmed after having a baby. However, these feelings can arrive weeks before the baby does. Excitement along with worries about handling the new responsibilities, exhaustion as your body prepares for and then recovers from childbirth can all be more than expected. For some parents, emotional responses become more extreme. Sadness and worry develop into depression, hopelessness and dread. When these feelings last longer than a few days and interfere with care for yourself and your baby, it is time to consider an evaluation.
Common signs
Emotional
Sadness, excessive worry, feeling numb or having thoughts about harming yourself or the baby.
Physical
Difficulty falling or staying asleep, loss of appetite, lack of energy, disinterest in self care.
Behavioral
Loss of interest in social activity, relationships, withdrawal from the baby or constant hovering or checking on the baby.
